This September up-and-coming design house Creatures of Comfort is set to once again showcase their designs at New York Fashion Week to a crowd of fans, fashionistas, and glitterati.Worn frequently by trendsetters and “cool girls” like Kendall Jenner, Kim Gordon, and Bella Thorne, the house, created by Jade Lai, is known for it’s wearable, down-to-earth approach to fashion — perfect for those who admire the designs of Acne Studios, Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, and Junya Wantanabe.
Though Creatures of Comfort first got it’s start in Los Angeles in 2005 as a boutique stocking covetable labels and trends, in 2009, Lai decided to start making her own line. Since then, her business has expanded across the country and taken New York City by storm, especially with the opening of the Creatures of Comfort on Soho’s Mulberry Street in 2010.
Lai stresses the importance of quality tailoring over trends, and wants her pieces to be as wearable ten years from now as they are now. Simultaneously casual and eye-catching in their originality, her work is perfect for a downtown afternoon. She focuses on variations of the white button-down blouse, sleek black pants, and ankle-length skirts, mixing it up with kooky patterns and prints that cater to her creative clientele. Frequently inspired by her background in architecture, many of Lai’s pieces are structural and even deconstructed, calling to mind the Margiela golden years.
For her latest collection, Lai peppered the runway with blue and white striped oversize dresses cinched at the waist with thick belts, brown and white chessboard prints on loose tops and skirts, color-blocked pockets across the chest, and, perhaps best of all, sexy, meticulously tailored suits that were reminiscent of Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic “le Smoking” look.
For effortlessly cool, unfussy, and funky women who want to pull off the, “Oh this? I just threw it on” look, Jade Lai for Creatures of Comfort is one of the few acceptable options. Practical and whimsical, fun and serious, the house seems to have hit its stride, and its popularity is only increasing as it continues to gain a rabid cult following.
