Ever dream of running away with the circus? Me too!
New York Style Guide reporter Lisa Pirro was lucky enough to be invited to peek behind the curtains to see what happens before the spotlights shine on Cirqe du Soleil’s show Varekai, which was running from August 12-23 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise Florida and next to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN on August 26th. Here is what she had to say:
There is always something mystical about being in a dark theater and watching the magic that happens before the magic happens. Even without costumes or make-up watching the performers for Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai practice their craft is still quite the show. I had the privilege of seeing the Russian Jumpers fly through the air with the greatest of ease and was blown away by how easy they make something so difficult look. It also made me want to join in on the fun. Sadly for that, access was denied 🙁
Of course what would a Cirque du Soleil show be without costumes? The publicist for Varekai, Julie Desmarais told me “We have about 2,000 pieces of costumes in the show, about 80 different looks. One performer will do three to four change overs of costumes in just one performance.” Keep in mind, the performers not only have to wear the costumes, but perform in them as well, which can be quite a challenge with some of the pieces.
Listen up mom’s and dad’s, you need to take your kids to see Varekai. Let them enter a world of music, costumes, color and wonderment! Every child should get the chance to experience this kind of theatrical magic, but not every child does.
Actually, this message goes out to all of you. We are so very lucky to live in a place that gives us access to all different kinds of entertainment. Get out there and explore something new! I promise you it will be a night none of you will forget. Besides, you can always rent a movie, but you can’t watch this kind of performance at home. Date night, anyone?
