This year’s upcoming New York Fashion Week has already let us know that we are to expect the unexpected. A revamped logo, two new locations (goodbye, Lincoln Center) and a new Lexus sponsorship are just a few of the changes being implemented this September. Likewise, our favorite designers and most-anticipated collections will reflect the upheaval, and one show you won’t want to miss belongs to no other than the acclaimed Alexander Wang. Already known for his ability to wed modernity and simplicity, the 31-year-old is premiering a collection that he’s poured his heart and soul into.

The New School grad has a multifaceted career, from collections with H&M that brought runway style at an affordable price to a three-year role as creative director for Balenciaga. Wang gave the couture house in Paris some of its most edgy and chic collections, like Ready To Wear Fall 2013 that encapsulated the timeless essence of autumn effortlessly and merged it with a modernistic approach to high-end street wear. Earlier this summer, however, Wang announced he would not be returning to the French fashion house and would instead be dedicating his time to his eponymous line.

He’s already shown that this year is a time of exciting innovations and reinterpretation, starting with a 9 p.m. show instead of his traditional 5 p.m. kick off and immediately following up with a 10th Anniversary Celebration bash sure to attract fashion’s biggest names. Plenty of rumors are already swirling, such as whether or not we can expect a surprise musical appearance from artists like The Weeknd, Haim or other participants of his recent Do Something campaign.

One this is for sure: eyes will be more fixed on Wang’s collection this New York Fashion Week than usual. When a designer departs from a position as coveted as creative director of a brand as renowned as Balenciaga to focus on his own line, expectations run high. Perhaps we can find some clues to what direction his latest collection may travel by looking back at an interview he did with Paper magazine (x) in August. When asked, “What is luxury to you?”, Wang responded with a simple yet profound response that seems to embody everything his designs are about: “Having time, and having choices.”
